How to Maintain New and Used Car and Truck Tires in Tampa FL
Whether you bought new car tires or used truck tires for your vehicle, you will have to maintain them in order to give them longer lives. Remember, there are really no cheap tires. Even retread used truck tires will still cost you. The only cheap tires you will find are those that may not be worth buying or are not safe to use in Tampa FL.
Used truck tires are, by comparison, less expensive than new tires. People, therefore, usually recommend that you purchase used truck tires instead of new tires. There are good quality used truck tires, though, and used truck tires that are no longer safe for the road. The used truck tires that are road worthy are retread used truck tires from reputable sources and accompanied by warranties. Do not get used truck tires from dealers you have not checked for reliability. They are most likely taken from used vehicles without benefit of retreading. In over-inflated tires, the tire center gets more worn while in under-inflated tires the tire edges get more worn. Small air leaks in the tires may go unnoticed so a monthly check on tire inflation is necessary. Inflation is based on the recommendations of the car manufacturer as indicated in the car manual.
The way you drive your vehicle is also a factor in tire maintenance. Speeding has a negative effect on tire durability and results in more wear and tear. This is because high speeds generate high heat that is detrimental to rubber. Other harmful driving practices include panic stops, skids, fast starts and fast turns. Neither should you drive your vehicle on the edges of pavements, over curbs or over potholes and other impediments. They all wear out your tires faster and could actually damage them.
The tire’s load rating should be observed properly, too. This is specified by the manufacturer, as well. Not observing the load rating could result in overloading your tire which, in turn, could cause a dangerous blow out.

How do you figure out the speed correction on a truck with big tires?
I have a 76 chevy K20 truck. It has 33's on it. I know that the speedometer is off because of the bigger tires. How do you figure out exactly how off it is so that you know what speed you're really going?
Speedo error calculation
Remove cable, (from speedo) hook clothespin or a tape flag to inner drive cable
Roll car 52 feet, 9.5" (1/10 mile) and count how many times the cable turns to the nearest 1/4 turn
If cable turns 12 times the ratio would = 1,200, the gearing is 16.7% high and cable needs to be slowed down (higher driven gear tooth count)
If cable turns 8 times the ratio is 800, the gearing is 20% low and needs to be sped up (Lower number of driven gear teeth)
Another way to test..
Drive car 1 marked mile at 60 mph, using a stopwatch see how long it takes to travel the mile in seconds
Divide the time in seconds by 3,600 to find actual MPH
To find the error in % divide the error by the real mph

Find tire revs per mile
Tire revs = 20,168 / tire diameter in inchs
# of drive teeth x axle ratio x tire rev per mile / 1,001 = # of driven teeth
On a th-350 transmission it has 2 plastic gears behind where speedo cable screws into trans. These gears is what gives you a reading on your speedo. Each tooth changes reading by 5% (more teeth = lower readings, less teeth = higher readings)
