Useful Information On Seal Materials
You might be wondering how many kinds of seal materials exist. Well, don't worry, there are others out there wondering how plastic o rings, gasket seal, lip seal and other useful sealers are made.
Like other things, seals are made to perform special functions. They can be used to provide closure, connect two things or to hold something. That is why, the availability of different seal materials is important.
Seals are used and applied in different materials. Hence, there are seals for plastic o rings, gasket seal, lip seal, Teflon seal and graphite seal. Each of these adhesives are made for different applications.
Furthermore, it is believed that the efficiency of seals is dependent on their materials. Perhaps, this is a good reason why oil seal material is different from that of house roofs sealants.
Here are how these various seals are made and what materials are used to develop them:
Plastic O rings- These are one of the two mechanical seals available in the market. They are the most common type of seal and are also called packing or torus joint because of its shape. They are also freqently used to contain fluids.
Some of the seal materials used to form toric joints are nitrile and silicone. The Nitrile seal is usually found in cars and other automobiles. This is because it can resist liquid hydraulic, water and different petroleum products.
Rubber silicone on the other hand doesn't have the resistance of the former material. But, if there is something great about it then that'll be its ability to withstand varying severe temperature, which makes it an ideal seal to be used in pots and other cooking wares.
Moreover, PTFE of Teflon, natural rubber and Viton are some other popular resources used to create O rings.
Gasket seal- this type of seal is best for stopping leaks. It provides efficient seals between joints and connections of pipes and tubes. It also works in a mechanical manner, thus, requires a special kind of tools to apply it.
This type of seal is made up of different materials. It can be made of rubber, silicone asbestos, metals, fiberglass or plastic polymer. These materials are applied depending on the function of the seal.
There are also gaskets that are made up of neoprene. This chemical easily resembles a rubber with sturdier and more stable attributes. Neoprene seals are widely used in medicine, like wrist seals and dental braces.
A Lip seal or Radial shaft seal is best used for rotary tools and components. Some of their examples include hydraulic pumps, steering wheels and axles. Through application of lip seals, these parts and tools can be use longer and perform better.
Although traditional Radial shafts used rawhides, modern lip seals are made up of elastomer. This chemical is a form of polymer which possesses great yield pressure, which results to elasticity.
Of course, there are still others seals used and produced all over the world. Some of them may use some of these seal materials while other may use something else.

how do I fix a leaking shower head?
it's a pull knob (single knob)to turn the water on, and it's dripping constantly and driving me nuts not to mention wasting water. I guess it's the seal as I have changed the shower head using teflon tape and it is not that rubber washer. what I need to know is what to take off of where the knob is to take to the hardware store to replace. what is the part and what is it called?
ok so how do I know if its the diverter or the cartridge and which is which?
If this is a shower only and you have only one knob there is no diverter
If this is a tub and shower and you only have one knob your diverter is the little knob on the tub spout - this is not your problem
if this is a tub and shower and you have more than one control knob- the one that turns water on is your valve that has the cartridge in it
the one you turn to switch where water comes out(shower, tub spout, body sprays, etc.) is your diverter (diverts water from one to the other)
1. turn the house water off.
2. remove the knob.
3. there will be a large nut holding in the stem (piece in center that your knob was attached to) remove that nut.
4. pull hard on the stem, it should slide out of the brass body. you may have to wiggle it as you pull as sometimes they are stubborn, especially if it's never been taken out.
there will be water behind it, so stand aside or get wet
depending on which brand it is there may be screws instead of the big nut.
the part you pull out is called the cartridge, it will have small rubber o-rings on the back of it--don't lose them or drop down the drain.
line up the parts as you take them off so you know the order in which they go back in
