Are Hydrogen Fuel Cells Viable Power Sources for Electronics?
Up until now, the current technology has faced two major problems: producing hydrogen in real-time and storage of the hydrogen which must be stored under high pressure. SiGNa may have resolved these problems with their new process.
The company has found a way to store the hydrogen that is produced utilizing less pressure than you would find in a soda can. SiGNa Chemistry makes a compound called sodium silicide by mixing sodium metal with silicon powder. The powder that forms from the mixture is stored with water in a disposable container. The reaction of the water and the sodium silicide powder produces they hydrogen.
The new method has resulted in added benefits to hydrogen fuel cell technology. SiGNa was able to produce hydrogen in real-time, eliminating the need to refuel cells. Unlike other generation methods, this process allows any type of water to be used, even sea water or polluted water. Additionally, the cells had the capability of being started or stopped quickly before all the power in the fuel cell was exhausted.
The CEO of SiGNa Chemistry, Michael Lefenfeld, states the biggest obstacle to utilizing hydrogen fuel cells as a viable power source is to produce them on a large enough scale. The cells have to be produced in a large enough volume to make them cost-effective. This is the same problem that haunts all green technologies. However, the computer industry has already expressed an interest in having the fuel cells produced in mass for utilization in laptops. The cells can provide longer battery life and do not have the overheating issues of current lithium batteries. Furthermore, Asia has a large electric bicycle market, and they are also interested in these cells which have proven to provide 3-4 times longer battery life than current batteries. Both computer manufacturers and the Asian market recognize that longer battery life is extremely important to consumers.
Besides longer battery life, consumers can also take advantage of cost benefits if they utilize hydrogen fuel cells instead of traditional alkaline or lithium batteries. SiGNa Chemistry claims that their sodium silicide fuel cell would only cost $89 for 100 uses while lithium batteries would cost $512 for the same 100 charges. Worse yet, it would cost a whopping $967 to buy enough alkaline batteries to charge a cell phone 100 times. Again, SiGNa provides the caveat that their sodium silicide cell would have to be produced in reasonable volumes.
SiGNa Chemistry's fuel cell provides viable alternatives to current power sources. There are currently cell phone chargers on the market that use this fuel cell technology. What about you? Will you buy a laptop that essentially uses water as a power source?

Fixing rc tank leak?
The fuel tank on my rc car seems to have a leakage. The tank is made out of plastic- so i dont think heat is an issue. But the problem is will methanol/nitromethane mix react with silicone and make the leak even worst?
The oil in the mixture will be a bigger problem than the methanol. I have always used epoxy to fix fuel tanks but the flexing of the tank material (don't honestly know what they are made of) and pressure (I fly planes and you pressurize the tank with exhaust) will cause the epoxy to break away eventually. I have had success with making the hole larger and making a fiberglass "plug" that seals on both sides. This lasted the longest but still only last a few months.
So best bet is to get another tank ordered.
