Motion Control Servo

Servo Motors are kind electro-mechanical devices. Their primary function is to sense and receive negative feedback, identify errors the real as well as potential ones. Then they analyze and correct the performance of the mechanism based on this feedback. A servo that controls the motion of a particular mechanism is referred as motion control servo. Motion control, a subset of automation, is the mechanism in which the position and/or velocity of machines are controlled using servo.

Common controls done by the motion control servos are:

• Velocity control
• Position control (point to point)
• Force or pressure control
• Electronic gearing or cam profiling

Not long ago the world of motion control was controlled by analog electronics. Now, it's all in the digital space. The advances in chip technology have allowed the designers to sit in front of PCs, enter on-screen commands and measure every detail of motion axis using software simulators right from their desk.

The basic architecture of a motion control servo system contains:

• Motion controller -  it is required to generate set points for the desired output or motion profile and also to close a position and/or velocity feedback loop
• Servo Drive / Amplifier – it is required to convert the controller's control signal into a higher power electrical current / voltage that is fed into the actuator
• Actuator – It might be in the form of a hydraulic pump, electric motor, linear actuator or air cylinder in order to deliver the output motion.
• Feedback sensors – they communicate the position and/or velocity of the actuator to the controller in order to close the control loops
• Mechanical components, like gears, ball screws, linkages, belts, linear and rotational bearings, to change the motion of the actuator into the desired motion

Motion control servo is rampantly used in the field of robotics and CNC machine tools. It finds it use also in packaging, textile, printing, semiconductor production, and assembly industries. Some of the benefits of using such motion control servos are:
