Safety Engine

What number should a safety person be the most concerned with for Workers Compensation?
I have asked this same question often when presenting to Loss Prevention, Safety Engineers and similar positions. The common answers that I often hear are:
- Number of accidents
- Lost workdays for each claim
- Self-inspection results
Those are all extremely important. However, when a Vice President, President, CEO or CFO of a company asks me what number is the most important in evaluating a Work Comp safety program, I always say the Experience Modification Factor (E-Mod or X-Mod). Why do I give them that answer? Because it is the distilled number of what the claims costs are for a certain company. In other words, it is the insurance carrier's notation of how the safety program is performing over a few years, not just one year.
Oh, and self-insureds are not immune from the E-Mod. That's another misconception. It's just that there is a different term for the E-Mod for self-insureds and that term is the Loss Development Factor (LDF). The LDF may cover more years than the E-Mod, but it is still the ultimate evaluator of a company's safety program.
I often hear from safety personnel that the workers compensation insurance program is "some other department's problem." Nothing could be further from the truth. Everyone in the company should be aware and concerned with safety and workers compensation costs. The success of the safety program drives either increases or decreases in workers compensation premium costs.
Bottom Line - The LDF or E-Mod/X-Mod is the Workers Comp safety program's effectiveness turned into cash.

I understand that the engine on the new Toyota Yaris is designed to cut out when at idle, is this correct?
- I understand that the engine re-starts when you move off again? Exactly how does this system work and is it any good? Is it not bad for the engine to have it keep switching on and off? And what about the safety issues if you need to move off quickly?
My mates mini has this feature which can be turned on or off. It is basically a fuel saving idea, the engine doesnt really shut off..just goes into a sort of not on state..haha i find it really annoying, can be siting in traffic and it sounds like you stall everytime you try to move off, i think it is as sonn as you put the clutch down it restarts :]
