Is there a difference between the motor rpm and impeller rpm which are connected on single shaft?
We have a pump for which we had observed the details given that the pump rpm is 2460, also we found that the motor rpm is listed as 2960 on the name plate given. Here my doubt is that why here it got the difference in rpm though the motor and the pump impeller are on a single shaft? how would it possiable?
Your question was wrongly addressed to the Geography section. You may have a better answer asking somewhere else but since we are at it:
It is impossible to have the pump rotating at another speed than the motor if they are on the same shaft. The only way to achieve a difference is through a reduction gear. The question then is: Why would you want a motor to rotate faster than what it is supposed to rotate? The answer is; to have a higher torque. Here is an example:
I had a 65 HP engine in my ultralight engine going 6,000 RPM maximum. The propeller spinned only half that speed due to a one to two reduction gearbox. I have now a 85 HP engine with direct drive; both engine and propeller turning at 3,000 RPM maximum. Yet I don't climb any faster than before. That is because while the engine develop more power, the torque is not sufficiant to give the same effect. But, at cruise speed and level flight, I fly faster.
