Brake rotors - getting better of brake fade
The star performers are those who deliver when it is crunch time, that is when the pressure to perform is very high and the situation hangs in balance. At such a time the outcome depends on the star performer's effort and the outcome can be quite seriously bad if the star performer does not deliver. In a movie at such a time the hero delivers the telling blow and saves the day and justifies his billing. But in real life it is not that there are always happy endings.
For example when you need to stop your car quickly when it is going at a high speed your brakes have very little time to deliver the desired outcome. At such time the mechanism of the brakes presses the brake pads against the brake rotors and the friction so generated results in the retarding force that brings the car to a halt. However as the friction is being generated, the components start to heat up and if this heat is not dissipated fast enough the friction generated will start to reduce and you will feel the brakes start to fade and are not able to continue to generate a large retarding force.
Therefore it is important that the heat generated during braking is effectively dissipated. You may wonder as to how come such a lot of heat is generated. Well you will know that the car is a heavy object and therefore when it is moving fast it possesses a lot of kinetic energy. When the car is brought to a halt all this kinetic energy must be converted to heat energy and that means that a lot of heat is generated. Thankfully there is a lot of research done to improve the components of the braking system and chances are the latest cross drilled rotors are better at dissipating the heat than the rotors of your car if it is a few years old. And installing them will enable you to enjoy a more confident braking performance. You will have better car control and your driving will become less stressful. need help on my 85 bronco?
i have a 85 bronco that the timing is not right ,i pulled the number one plug and put it on top dead center and the balancer was at 0 tdc on the mark and i put the dist rotor facing the number one plug an tried to start it and it backfired out of the carb someone told me that the timing chain had slack in it, could this cause the timing problem? and when i tried to time it at 10 deg btdc like the book said it would not even run and when you went to accelerate it would barely rev up i guess my question is what can i do about this change the timing chain?
if this is a full size bronc with a v8 its real easy to check the timing chain with out opening anything--in the center of the damper is a large bolt with a head af about 1 3/16" .with the ignition key off and for a little more safety-pull the coil wire out--take a breaker bar with the socket and probably a short extension and put it on the big damper bolt-with the distributor cap off turn the breaker bar to the left until the dist.rotor moves==then move the breaker bar to the right-until the rotor turn-if the chain and upper gear are good= the rotor should turn as soon as you move the breaker bar=a little play is normal. if you move the breaker bar handle anything over about 3/4 of an inch before the rotor turns-the chain has stretched and should be replaced as a timing set-crank gearcam gear and chain. another thing is those broncos had a wierd way of setting the timing-i dont recall the procedure from here at home-but its in any chiltons manual. you dont just diconnect the vaccuum line and set the timing-that should have the eec system with the module mounted on the dist. body, one other thing-are you sure you were on #1--cuz fords are the opposite side from gm. i.e. chevy
