Does the rocket speed double?
A rocket has its engine on in space, then turns it off. It continues at the same rate and turns the engine back on. Does the rocket speed now double or continue on at the same speed?
assuming there's no friction in space, the speed of the rocket will increase each time it turns the engine on. remember newton's 1st law: everything remains at a constant velocity ( zero or non-zero) unless an external unbalanced force acts on it. in space, there is no friction. thus, till the engine is on, the rocket will accelerate. once u turn the engine off, since there is no resistance to the motion of the rocket, it continues at the same speed that it had when the engine was just switched off. once u turn the engine on again, the rocket will start accelerating once again. remember this will happen only at zero friction. otherwise, the speed of the rocket will gradually decrease once the engine is turned off.
