How To Rotate Your Tires
Rotating your car tires is very important. You rotate your car tires because they wear out differently depending on where they ride. The front tires wear out differently than the tires in the rear. You should try to rotate your tires roughly every 6 to 8 months. Tire rotation will extend the time you have your tires. It also allows you to have a safer vehicle.
The first thing that you will want to do when you are preparing to rotate your tires is to take out the spare tire. If you have a spare tire that is actually a small temporary tire, you will not want to use that tire. You must use the regular tires you have on the car so that you don't hurt your car even more.
After you have decided if you are going to use your spare tire or not, you will want to get out your car jacks. You must have four jack stands so that your car is completely off the ground. Once you have your car jacked up on all four jack stands, you are ready to begin removing the front and rear tires. The easiest way to remember what tire was where is to simply place the tire on the ground next to where you just removed the tire.
Once all the tires are off, it is time to start moving the tires. You will want the front tires to go to the back and the back tires to go to the front. Take the right front tire and put it on the ground next to the left rear axle. Take your left back tire and place it on the ground where you're right front tire was. Take your left front tire and put it on the ground to place onto the right back. Take your right back tire and put it on the ground for the left front tire.
Now that you have repositioned all of your tires, it is time to put them on. After you have replaced all the tires, lower your car off the jack stands onto the ground one wheel at a time. Do the right side first and then the left side or vice versa. Do not do the front and then the back because this could cause damage to the front and rear bumpers.

What are the potential dangers of bearings going out on the rear axle of a Chevy van?
I was told by a shop to replace the rear with a used axle from a junkyard as the cheapest way to go. Van is G-20, 1995.
That's going to be a minimum of a 9.5" rear end.
The likelihood of failure of a used rear end is EXTREMELY low.
If it's the 9.5", the only cause for any concern is the pinion bearing, which apparently had a few problems, but not nearly enough to condemn the entire lot.
The 14 bolt full floating axle has been around since the 70's, if not longer, and the 9.5" (sometimes referred to as a 14 bolt semi-floater) has been around since 1982. Ask yourself how many GM trucks are running around from that vintage to give you an idea of how likely/common bearing failure is. 
What is the reason for the replacement suggestion? Axle bearings are a lot cheaper than replacing the whole axle, but even then failure is not common so why are you having to replace the whole thing?
