Don't worry it will not cost millions and is not unrealistic. I built one at my home for less than $10K. You need software of course like Microsoft Flight Simulator or X-Plane. Also, you need the add-on software for avionics which ideally are best to run on a separate networked computer controlling the glass cockpit (your other PC monitors). For a realistic look and feel, you can buy either Full MIP Panel (Main Instrument Panel), replica throttle quadrant, communication pedestal, overhead panels ....etc but will cost you in the neighborhood of $30K-$50K. There is of course the cheap plastic stuff from joystick manufacturers. I'm talking about quality built replicas from simulator shops. The best option is to buy what is hard to build, like motorized throttle qudrants, and build the rest. I did my Boeing 737 simulator with a full MIP panel with switches, gauges, annunciators ....etc with 5 monitors for the glass cockpit avionics, a large 42" screen for the front view, exact replica motorized B737 throttle quadrant with speed brakes, flaps lever, reverse thursters ...etc. my own communication pedestal for captain only with real knobs switches and in full working order, a captain seat (from a chevy SUV), yoke and rudder pedals ...etc all in all I have about 14 USB connections, 3 USB hubs, 2 computers, 6 monitors, a few add-on software, all backlighted for a beatiful night dark cockpit for uner $10K. All sitting on a wooden platform that is mobile to move around and relocate. All panels and controls go through IO cards to USB connections to hubs to computers for simulation of real touch and feel activities. Of course if you are thinking of a "motion platform" you're looking at 3-DOF (Degrees of Freedom (axes)) or 6-DOF and you're talking about another $50K - $80K at least and you need to have a lot of space in a high ceiling area. A cockpit shell will cost extra (about $4K) if you feel you need it. Many extras can be added to make it look like the real thing. Bottom line its doable, and many do-it-yourself simmers like myself are doing it and enjoying tremendously a fantastic feeling of sitting in a cockpit with surround sound and using instrumentation with touch and feel for knobs switches, guages, communication panels ...etc that actually work wit hthe simulator software.
