What is Radio Frequency Ablation?

Radio frequency ablation is a procedure that can cure many types of tachycardia. Using small tubes, or catheters, that are threaded into the heart, radio frequency energy (low-voltage, high frequency electricity) is targeted toward the area(s) causing the abnormal heart rhythm, permanently damaging small areas of tissue. The damaged tissue is no longer capable of generating or conducting electrical impulses. If the procedure is successful, this prevents the arrhythmia from being generated, curing the patient.

Who is eligible for Radio Frequency Ablation?

Patients with multiple tumors or a single large tumor that cannot be resected surgically are considered candidates for RF ablation. This includes patients with metastatic disease. Patients who cannot tolerate surgery are also ideal candidates.

Preparations before Radio Frequency Ablation Surgery:

Patients may be asked to discontinue certain medications in the days before the procedure. Most patients are advised to stop eating and drinking at midnight the night before the procedure.

Some physicians suggest that premenopausal women avoid ablation during their menstrual period; blood-thinning medications may be used and could cause excessive menstrual bleeding. A pregnancy test may be performed prior to the procedure because of the risk that radiation (x-rays) poses to a developing fetus.

Procedure of Radio Frequency Ablation Surgery:

The procedure is usually performed under intravenous sedation (conscious sedation) on an outpatient basis. The patient is usually awake and is given standard drugs (midazolam, fentanyl and meperidine) to relax during the procedure. These are the same types of drugs that are given for any biopsy procedure. Most patients are comfortable during the procedure and require no pain medication or at the most, over- the-counter analgesics when at home.

A small needle (17 gauge) is inserted into the lesion using by ultrasound or CT guidance. The needle has an insulated portion and a variable length, uninsulated portion that is the heating element of the needle. A machine generates energy, which is transmitted to the tip of the needle. The energy at the tip of the needle causes ionic agitation and frictional heat in the tissues surrounding the tip. In turn, these tissues can reach temperatures that cause cell death and coagulative necrosis. This usually occurs at temperatures above 50 degrees centigrade. The treatment can be repeated several times to kill more tissue. Each treatment takes about 15 minutes. Typically, RFA can create a kill area of 3-4 cm in size. The killed cells are not removed, but slowly are absorbed and digested by the natural "immune" system of the body, and a scar appears in the treated area.

Recently, microwave ablation systems have become available. These also allow special small needles to heat tissues causing cell death.

Post-operative care of Radio Frequency Ablation Surgery:

Patients will be taken to a recovery area while the effects of the sedative medication wear off. The area of catheter insertion will be monitored for bleeding and the heart rhythm is observed closely during this period. Patients must usually stay in bed for several hours to reduce the risk of bleeding from the catheter site. Patients usually feel tired but well.

Some patients are admitted to the hospital after the procedure, while others go home later the same day. Certain activities are not recommended for a brief period in order to avoid strain on the catheters site.

Patients may be asked to take aspirin every day for several weeks to prevent blood clots. The doctor will give more detailed information about medications needed after the procedure. Usually pain medication is needed for only a short time, if at all.

Is there a advantageous reason 12Ghz is used for satellite TV?
