Planetary Gearbox
Gearbox provides speed and torque conversions from a rotating power source to another device using gear ratios. Gearboxes have found use in a wide variety of different (often stationary) applications, such as wind turbines. These are also used in agricultural, industrial, construction, mining and automotive equipment.
Planetary gearing is a gear system that consists of one or more outer gears, or planet gears, revolving about a central, or sun gear. Typically, the planet gears are mounted on a movable arm or carrier which itself may rotate relative to the sun gear. Planetary gearing systems also incorporate the use of an outer ring gear or annulus, which meshes with the planet gears. The axes of all gears are usually parallel, but for special cases like pencil sharpeners they can be placed at angle, introducing elements of bevel gear.
The Planetary Gearbox arrangement is an engineering design that offers many advantages over traditional gearbox arrangements. One advantage is its unique combination of both compactness and outstanding power transmission efficiencies. A typical efficiency loss in a planetary gearbox arrangement is only 3% per stage. This type of efficiency ensures that a high proportion of the energy being input into the gearbox is multiplied and transmitted into torque, rather than being wasted on mechanical losses inside the gearbox.
Another advantage of the planetary gearbox arrangement is load distribution. Because the load being transmitted is shared between multiple planets, torque capability is greatly increased. The more planets in the system, the greater load ability and the higher the torque density. The planetary gearbox arrangement also creates greater stability and increased rotational stiffness.

What is the Park gear in an automatic transmission?
I'm mostly sure I know that the Park gear engages a small interlock somewhere in the transmission...a small tab pops up into a hole to prevent any movement. My question is, what is the disposition of the planetary gearset (regardless of the parking mechanism) while the car is in park? Is it shifted to Neutral gear, with the mechanism in place, or is it shifted to 1st gear, again with the mechanism in place?
The first reply answered the function of the parking pawl quite well, so I won't address that here. To answer your second part of the question regarding planetary gearset / neutral. The gearset does not change. It is constantly held together via the center gear, the pinion gears meshed with the center gear and the ring gear (meshed to the pinion gears) that houses the whole planetary gear set.
When the car is placed in park two things occur. The parking pawl is engaged (mechanical lock) and the transmission fluid flowing through the transmission is routed away from the clutch packs (control planetary gear set) via by a valve control body. The clutch pack (several different ones in every transmission) control what gear, including reverse, for the car to be able to move. Transmission fluid, via the valve body routes the fluid flow to the proper clutch pack based on where you put your selector and when the transmission shifts gears when reaching road speed.
