If I have a flight with one connection, do I have to go through security twice?
I'm looking at a flight with one 2-hour stop in the middle, and I've never actually booked a flight anywhere before. After I get off the first plane, do I have to go through security again? Is it only in a certain spot -- say, if I stay in the airport, I don't have to, or if I stay near the gates?
If your connecting flight is on the same airline, you have a very good chance of not having to go outside security. If you are traveling on a codeshare, ie connecting to a partner airline, you may have to change terminals, and that also depends on how large the airport is where you are connecting. You can check with the agent at the counter or gate when you initially check in for your flights.
Once you are in the connecting city, you are not required to stay at the gate or even inside security. Smokers will typically leave the secured area during a connection to go outside if there is no smoking area available. If you do choose to leave security (without the need to, of course) make sure you give yourself enough time to go back through before your flight boards. You generally want to be at your gate ready to board about 45 minutes before departure time.
