Do I need the nylon ring on my rear axle nut?
I have a '99 Honda Shadow. Earlier today, I was loosening the rear axle nut so I could change the drive chain. I noticed that the nut appeared to originally have been equipped with a nylon insert. I say originally because the nylon ring is now missing. I have owned the bike since last october and have ridden it for about 700 miles and have not noticed a problem. The ring could have been missing when I bought it or it could have fallen off since then, I couldn't say when. My question is, is this nylon ring critical or can I ride the bike without it. Also, if I have to get a new one, do I have to go to the dealer or can I just pick one up at a hardware store. Thanks.
