Metal Core PCBs in Computer Hardware Components
Metal Core PCBs are boards with used to manage the thermal conductivity (also known as heat) of a printed circuit board and the application it's being used in.
While most commonly found in light emiting diode applications, they can also be used in high heat, high technology computer hardware and peripheral situations.
The metal core can be composed of one of the following metals:
- aluminum (aluminum core PCB)
- copper (copper core PCB)
- a mixture of special alloys
With the most common of the three listed above being aluminum core boards.
In modern consumer computers, fans are enough to cool the system's components or water cooled systems. For higher end applications, such as motion controlled computer robotics, a metal core is used to help disperse the heat.
Metal core printed circuit boards disperse heat many times ( up to 8 or 9 times ) faster than FR4 boards (FR-4is the most common dielectric material used in the construction of PCBs). MCPCB laminates scatter and dissolve heat to components more resistant to the heat, such as heatsinks. High heat generating components are kept cooler which results in better performance and a longer life span of the applications.
In common computer applications today, LEDs and LED indicator lights are often used. The light and heat created by these LEDs has increased the core temperature of applications significantly, making the need for thermal management increasingly important. Metal core boards are most often found in light emitting diode applications and likewise in LED-heavy computer hardware situations.
Other applications where metal core printed circuit board fabrication is used:

- Street safety applications (streetlights, lighting, etc.)
- General lighting applications
- System automotive LED applications
- Power converters: telecom, industrial, high voltage regulator, power supplies
- Hybrid/electric motor control applications
- Photovoltaic Applications
Metal core boards are still manufactured using standard SMT (surface mount technology - the entire body of the process and components that create printed circuit board assembly with leadless components) assembly equipment. They are normally boards with multiple layers and they can also be on a flexible board or rigid flex board for tight space areas and custom size apps.
Common uses for this are mobile phones and curved casing apps, the iPhone being an ideal example of both.
