Wheel chocks – types and uses
Wheel chock uses are boundless when you need to keep a vehicle on wheels from accidentally moving. A wheel chock is a wedge shaped device that is put on the ground and against a tire as a stop gap for safety reasons. A circular tire has the tendency to roll because of gravity and the chock stops it from doing so. The power of gravity pushes against the tire and the ground. Especially when the tire is on an angle or hill, it does its work.
Types of Wheel Chocks
Wheel chocks can come in different sizes, shapes and be made from varied materials. They can start as small devices for ATVs and motorcycles and come as large as 77 pounds with a cart to help put it in place for work at mines, construction or other heavy duty wheel chock uses. The actual size needed is determined by the vehicle itself, and should be tested to make sure that it works. All will be triangular in shape with some having a right angle with the longest side in a cup shape, while others will look like a parking stop – a triangle with the top cut off. One type of Monster wheel chock looks like a giant piece of Swiss cheese. The holes make it lighter to pick up and to put in place. Chocks can be found made out of urethane and polyurethane, rubber, steel and aluminum.
Where a Wheel Chock Can Be Used
There are many wheel chock uses in the utility and telephone fields, the mining industry, construction, trucking and even aviation and fire protection. A fleet of trucks responsible for service in residential areas will use the chocks every time they stop the truck to service a household. This safety measure will ensure that people and property are not damaged due to a roll away vehicle. In the mining industry it is especially important to stop a truck from rolling, especially when it is hauling tons of materials out of the mine. There are even safety guidelines set up by the Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to protect people and property. Off-road chocks are frequently used in construction when a developer is working on raw land that has no roads yet. Specialty chocks have been developed that work on less firm surfaces by utilizing a steel or aluminum grate.
The trucking industry doesn't typically need as heavy duty of a chock because an 18-wheeler will typically be parked in a parking lot which is smoother and may not have as much of an incline. Airplanes have wheel chock uses and are similar to the conditions they might be used in the trucking business, as airports are generally flat. Fire trucks may encounter all types of terrain and that's why they need heavy duty all-terrain chocks developed specifically for fire engines. Finally, when a car or truck is being used on a farm or home for maintenance work, a chock should be put in place to hold it in case of a brake failure.
Regardless of the wheel chock uses, OSHA and other governmental agencies recommend them when a vehicle is parked anywhere near people or property.
