Dune buggy help?
Hi.I shall not reviel my age, however, my dad and I are planing to make a dune buggy.I LOVE dune buggys! However,my dad said I should find out a little bit about them first,so, I've got a few questions about building one.(I like The Mayers manx dualsport)
1: Can I build it with somthing besides a VW?
2: If I do (with or without VW), can I install a moter from a diffrent and fastter car?(Porche, mercedes,...)
3: I want a car that can do about 170 mph.(230 kmp. but i'm not sure, I'm american. Can't work so good with metrics)VW engine not powerful enough.
4: Besides the engine, can I put diffrent car parts on it?(Tires, lights, seats)
5: If I can use other parts like mercedes, can I put a fancy Mercedes symble on the front of the car?(Just for some style:) )
Any good dune buggy site recomendations?
First off, the cheapest & easiest way to fly is original VW. Most all dune buggy kits are based on the VW Beetle chassis, however, many can be built with a tube chassis.
If you go VW, you can use a Type 4 VW engine from a 72-79 Bus, a 411, 412, or Porsche 914 or 912. Easy to find, & drops right in the Beetle chassis.
This is the best way to go for 'street-legal'. Plus, you can build them up to 2400cc's & get around 170 HP out of them. Any more than that in a 1000 lb buggy is just dangerous.
With a tube chassis, you can use about anything. Subaru is a popular choice, but remember: now you have to add a cooling system.
170 mph ?!? Are ya nuts? Most modern cars can barely be driven over 100. Settle for something that can cruise at 70 without getting yourself killed.
Google "dune buggies" & see what results you get on bodies besides the (very expensive) Manx.
