Will shifting to neutral damage my engine?
Explanation: I have a 2005 Malibu Maxx with an automatic transmission. On my daily commute to school going down a tall suspension bridge I shift into neutral in order to lower my rpm when going down.
Problem: Lately I've gotten a huge amount of hesitation when trying to accelerate into a passing lane. I press on the gas and the car will not accelerate.
Question: Is there a connection between my shifting to neutral and my hesitant acceleration?
Shifting into neutral when coasting will do absolutely NO damage to either your engine OR your transmission, but it's not recommended for safety reasons. If the engine were to stall just at the wrong time, your power brake booster wouldn't work, leaving you with about 1/4 of your stopping power. A panic stop while coasting in neutral can easily stall an engine, whereas a panic stop in gear cannot; at least nowhere NEAR as easily. That said; I must admit that I do the same thing myself, just about every time I go down that hill from Victorville to San Bernadino. 
Haven't damaged my car YET, though.
Your performance issues are almost certainly unrelated. You probably just need a tuneup. And how many miles are on your fuel filter?
