What gauge wire should I use for experimenting with small, low powered circuits?

I'm talking about a circuit between 1.5 and 12 volts (obviously I'd use the thicker insulation) running from standard batteries (AA, 9v, poss, 12v). I think I'm right in saying that the amps is determined by the actual circuit rather that the power supply (something I know I'm going to do is make a small fm transmitter and receiver) so I'm not sure what to use. I want the thinnest wire possible with it still being safe. I understand the maximum amps from a 9v battery is about 600 mAh but about 2850 from a AA (does that mean 11400 when 4 are connected?)

20 wire would be fine for most all applications in that voltage and current range. Any insulation, or none at all is fine at these voltage levels. If you have a wire getting warm, it's probably an indication you did something wrong.

If you know the current is low, such as with IC signal pins, use something smaller, like #26.

If you short out a AA cell, you can get a few amps. But the fusing current of #20 is 50 amps or so, so you don't have to worry about the wire melting.

But mention 12 volts. IF that is an auto battery or something comparable, then all bets are off, as you can get as much as 500 amps, and you need something like #2 for that.

The amount of current you can get out of an AA, for example, which is the best of the one you mention, is dependent on the internal resistance of the cell, and that is something the manufacturers don't specify. I'd guess at a few or 5 amps.

The amp-hr or mA-hr rating is a measure of the amount of energy stored in the cell. A 2000 mA-hr AA can deliver 2000 ma (1 amp) for an hour or 200 ma for 10 hours or 20 ma for 100 hours.
