Can I put an internally geared hub on ANY wheel?

I'm wondering if I could put an internal hub on any wheel or does the wheel have to be compatible? Do I have to buy the wheel with the hub already installed, or is there a way I can adjust a normal mountain bike wheel to fit the hub?

Hm. I hope not to make you feel dumb with my explanation, I am sure many others have a similar question so I'll explain as fully as I can

Lets first explore what parts are included on most wheels. You have the rim which is the hoop that holds the tire, the spokes and nipples which hold the rim to the hub, and of course, the hub.

Internally geared hubs can generally be part of any wheel, but there is no way to put the "guts" of an internally geared hub into another hub.

Soooo, if you want a wheel with an internally geared hub, you'll either need to find a prebuilt wheel that includes the rim and hub combination you want or you can build/have built a wheel with what you want.

If you plan on putting the finished wheel on a MTB, you'll also need to make sure that the hub spacing- the space between the dropouts of the frame, where the wheel fits- is the same as the wheel you're replacing. If your frame has vertical dropouts as most MTBs have these days you'll also need a chain tensioner to replace your derailleur. You will probably need a new chain as well, not to mention a new shifter compatible with the hub.
