Would a tibetan mastiff be a good guard, and hiking companion?
I want a Tibetan mastiff for protection because i heard they were fierce and well a good protector. I mean i dont want a dog thats gonna be mean to everyone like a pitbull but just something that will act quickly if something goes wrong. And i do alot of winter hiking and i heard they love the snow and they can dog good in all climates. Because i live in new england
Keep in mind that Tibetan Mastiffs can be like wild dogs. They tend to be extremely independent and think for themselves. To quote an owner, "Oh, TMs want to be with you, it is just that TMs think that if they are in the same country as you, they are with you." Sure, your dog would love you, but do not expect it to be a lapdog, a cuddle-bug or even to reliably come when called (most don't). And even though they can utterly hard-headed and willfully ignorant of you, they are hugely sensitive, so you've got to be patient, calm, consistent and benevolent or I promise you'll hurt the poor guy's feeling. As a highly intelligent breed, they tend to succumb to boredom very, very easily, and a bored dog is a destructive dog. Tibetan Mastiffs can wreak unbelievable chaos if not properly exercised both mentally and physically. They need heavy grooming, are often ridiculously finicky eaters, love-love-love to dig, and generally bark throughout the night. Due to their suspicious nature, they need an *insane* amount of proper socialization, and it needs to continue throughout their lives.. and even then, you may very well still find your TM growling at the little kid next door if he's running around or hollering. Oh, and if you intend to take your dog hiking, I hope you plan to use a lead at all times, because Tibetan Mastiffs are dogs that should NEVER be left off leash. (Like I said, they rarely obey recall commands. If you let your TM go free on a hike, there is a very, very real chance you won't see him again..)

But hey, if you're cool with all that, they're great. Yes, they are heavy-duty guardian dogs, you've got that right. If you purchase from a QUALITY BREEDER (not an amateur breeder, not a puppy mill, not a pet store, not a hobby breeder, not the lady down the street, not someone you find in a newspaper) and socialize the living daylights out of that dog -- especially during the first two or three months of life -- he should be relatively friendly (or at least tolerant) of friendly strangers. Well-bred, well-socialized and well-trained, he shouldn't be mean to everyone, not at all. They do need lots of exercise, so assuming you'd always leash him, I'm sure he'd love hiking, especially in the snow.
(Oh, and please, educate yourself about pit bulls. Aggressive pits are the result of seriously lousy breeding and socialization/training. Even in dog fighting, pits are supposed to fight dogs, not humans -- the human needs to be able to safely pull the dog away from the fight, so human aggressive pits were always culled. Only genuine idiots would encourage human aggression in a pit bull. And when not raised by idiots, they're generally clownish, goofy, loving, cuddly dogs who would rather lick a stranger to death. And this is coming from someone who would never own a pit -- they're much too energetic for me, I'm a Mastiff person -- so don't just wave me off as another super-biased pit lover!)
