Using Grab Bars in the Bathroom

Bathrooms are full of hazards and for those with restricted mobility, including the elderly, disabled and even those just slightly unsteady on their feet, using the bathroom can be a difficult, even dangerous exercise.

Bathroom floors are traditionally wooden, covered with linoleum vinyl or tiled, all of which can become slippery when splashed with water and cause a bathroom user to lose their footing possibly injuring themselves.

Bathroom facilities are often difficult to use for even people with only slight mobility impairment.

  • Taking a bath or shower over the tub can be hard as it requires a person to step over a high ledge and lower themselves into the bath tub, which can also itself be slippery.

  • Using the toilet can be tricky as a person must lower themselves backwards onto a small area.

  • Having a shower may be difficult as it usually requires a person to step into the shower stall, over a small lip, and to stand on a slippery shower stall floor.

Bathrooms can be remodelled to include wide wet room showers, lowered bath tubs or tubs with an opening side door, raised toilets and non slip flooring. This is an expensive exercise and there are reasonably priced products on the market that can be incorporated into the bathroom to enable mobility impaired users to safely move around. Grab bars are one of these products.

Grab bars can be attached to most smooth bathroom surfaces (the wall, the bath or the shower) and provide the bathroom user something to steady themselves on when they are getting in and out of the bath tub or shower or lowering themselves onto or standing up from using the toilet. Most grab bars are not designed to take a person's full body weight.

Installation of grab bars is easy if they have the suction cup base, you just stick the suckers on. This type of grab bar is easy to remove and re-install in another area. Most grab bars are however made for screw fixing which makes them a more permanent fixture. Grab bars can be made of plastic or chrome and can fit with most bathroom colour schemes. More expensive grab bars that have the suction cup type base include a suction indicator to show if the product is attached correctly and a soft grip finish making them more comfortable to use. The price of grab bars ranges from a couple of dollars to upwards of $40 depending on the material it is made of and the added features that it includes. This estimate of cost does not include installation.

When installing a grab bar with a suction base the user should;

  • Ensure that it is mounted on a clean smooth flat non porous surface

  • Make sure the handle is securely attached before use, if it is loose reapply to the surface until firmly attached

  • Do not place on cracked tiles, uneven surfaces or over tile grout

Grab bars with a suction base are usually not suitable for use on tiles smaller than 4.7inches x 4.7 inches or 12cm x 12cm.

Installing a grab bar that requires screw fixing is a little more technical as solid fixing is required in the wall behind the bathroom linings. Some home owners have difficulty finding this solid fixing without damaging the wall finishes and it is recommended to employ a professional to carry out this type of installation, also ensuring the correct and safe installation.
