what type of a sonnet is this ?

You can call this a sonnet only on the basis of the number of lines it has......that is 14 lines......sonnets should have fourteen lines...
but the rule of sonnet is that every line should contain 10 syllables each...this poem does not follow that rule...at some lines it has eight syllables and at some places six...
on the basis of rhyme scheme, there are three type of sonnets...
shakesperean, petrarchan and spenserian....
but this poem does not follow any of those rhyme schemes....
Shakespearen rhyme scheme is abab, cdcd, efef, gg
Petrarchan rhyme scheme is abba, abba, cde, cde
or abba, abba, cdc, dcd...
Spenserian rhyme scheme is abab, bcbc, cdcd, ee
While the rhyme sceme of this poem is
abaccb dedefgfg
so it caanot be considered as a sonnet as per the rules of english or italian sonnets...
but in old english, the word sonnet indicates a song....any short song or poem was called as a sonnet. there were then sonnets containing 16 lines, 15 lines, 12 lines...etc....so like that this short lyric of Poe can also be called a sonnet.....though it does not follow any rules of sonnet in the sense we use the word today.
