Couplings are used to attach two shafts at their ends. Precisely, these are mechanical devices that are used to transmit the torque in between the two non-coaxial shafts. Generally, gear couplings include a flexible joint that is joined to each of the shafts and there is a third shaft known as spindle which fixes the two joints. Grid couplings: Grid couplings are generally made of corrugated steel grids that can be easily bent to balance the load brought by misalignment.

 

Chain couplings: These are not exactly gear couplings but are similar to it. In chain couplings, a roller chain connects the sprockets on the end of each of the shaft.

 

Solid and magnetic coupling: Solid couplings are firm structures and magnetic and solid couplings do not require lubrication. They allow the two shafts to stay connected to transmit the torque.

how loose is the reversr gear shaft supposed to be in a 4 speed transmission?

I have a 1979 Chevy 4x4 and i had to replace the reverse shift fork. While putting it back together i notice that the shaft slide really easy, and Im wondering if thats normal.

its just worn in an will work good
