Can NASCAR race cars use any final drive gear ratio they want?
Is the final drive gear ratio dictated by the NASCAR rule book? How about the gear ratio in the transmission?
Nascar either dictates the rear gear at each track or they dictate the lowest rear gear that can be used. This used to be to limit rpm but after Talledega I don't have a clue as to their thinking.
All transmissions have to have a 1 to 1 forth gear and must be setup to run in 4th, the other gear ratios can be changed but cars must not be set up to use both 3rd and 4th gears on ovals.
