Boat-Buying Basics - A Vessel to Match Your Requirements and Budget
Do you want to spend your weekends cruising offshore? Do you want to spend quality time with your family and entertain your friends on-board? Do you want to use the vessel for commercial fishing? Whatever your purpose, you are sure to be able to find the right boats for sale with a little help from the right resources.
Here are a few questions that could help you understand boat-buying basics.
Why do you need a boat? The purpose of the vessel is the determining factor in your choice. Different makes and models with different features are available. Choosing one amongst these is only possible if you know the purpose the boat is going to serve. A recreational boat for offshore cruising would be quite different from a fishing vessel.
Which types of boat are available? Here are a few examples:
Deck boats – can easily accommodate 8-12 passengers; good for recreation
All-purpose fishing boats – suits both freshwater and saltwater fishing activities
Bowriders – enhances fun and enjoyment for all on-board
Catamarans – superb for leisure activities and sport sailing
Trawlers – complete with living facilities on-board; rivers, lakes and ocean sailing
Jon boats – multi-purpose boats for camping, fishing and hunting
Houseboats – luxurious living on-board with entertainment
Walkaround – good for fishing in coastal waters, bays and lakes
Sailboats – perfect for recreational purposes
Sedan Bridge – be it swimming or fishing, these boats suit all kinds of activities
Then there are the dinghies, inflatable, bass boats, motor yachts, electric boats, and many, many more. The list is quite extensive.
What features do you need to consider? Keep in mind the length, capacity and compatibility to weather and water elements that suit your requirement. Apart from these, do check the hull specifications, propulsion type, trailer-able or not, and such others.
Where do you buy it? Whether you are looking for recreational or fishing boats for sale, you can get it from an online store. The advantage of shopping online is that it gives you a clear idea about the options available. Moreover, you could also compare prices of different makes and models before you zero in on a particular one.
What are the expenses involved? Apart from paying for the boat, you may have to take care of other costs as well. How much would the boat cost? It would depend on the make and model you choose. However, if you are capable of arranging for the financing of the vessel, this is not a difficult thing.
Another expense is the accessories you choose for your boat. One essential is the canopy to protect the boat from the elements. Apart from these, you need fishing accessories like fish finders, bait wells, and so on or for other activities like platforms, lockers, stairs, etc.
Getting adequate insurance coverage for your vessel is another significant expense. This would safeguard you from unforeseen problems like theft or damage, liability claims, injury and damage claims, and so on. Keep in mind this factor when you are calculating the expenses for your boat.

I am wanting to buy a sailing catamaran for long distance cruising and want to know the top models are?
PDQ arguably makes the best for cruising. They are still building the Larger boats, 44 feet and up but their 36 was (and is) still one of the best available on the brokerage market. I am also fond of Victory 35s and The Endeavour Cat 35. Freebird, Lagoon, and Prout also build cruising catamarans but they will be a lot more money for your initial investment. Some more manufacturers are Privilege, Admiral, Catana and Jeanneau. They all build good boats, it is just a matter of which particular features you want. Count on a minimum of $150,000USD to buy a decent one with the right equipment. Some of them are close to 1million. A realistic budget for a "top model" is just shy of $500,000USD for a larger PDQ or a newer Jeanneau or the like, outiftted for the average cruise. As a professional Yacht Broker I can tell you as much as I like the Gemini 105 series they just aren't the quality you would need for a very long cruise. They are fantastic for coastal cruising, however. If you contact a local Yacht Broker that specializes in sailboats or even one of the ones in south Florida like 2Hulls or The Catamaran Company they will be able to discuss the positives and negatives of any particular model. I know this answers your question.
