The Pros and Cons of Wheel Types on Children's Buggies
When it comes to choosing buggies, there are many factors to consider, however, one of the most important features also happens to be the feature most overlooked when choosing between buggies. One of the most fundamental considerations, when purchasing a new buggy, is whether the wheels swivel. Depending on personal preference, and individual lifestyle, wheels should be fixed or swivel.
Here, we will discuss the pros and cons of each type of wheel. Many parents will buy, what they think at the time is the perfect buggy, but after having used the buggy a few times, they will come to regret their choice, and this is frequently due to the type of wheels chosen. An analogy of the problem would be a trip to the supermarket whereby a person selects a shopping trolley with faulty wheels, then spends the whole trip trying to manoeuvre without crashing into stock displays.
Swivel Wheels
Swivel wheels turn on a sharp angle, changing direction depending on the direction of the pressure exerted by the person pushing the buggy. The swivel feature makes the wheels very easy to manoeuvre; they are fantastic for navigating complicated terrains, such as supermarket displays! Maclaren buggies have a wide range of choice regarding wheels, and they are certainly worth considering when purchasing a new buggy.
Swivel wheels are better suited to inner city and town locations, where space is not a premium. They are particularly suited to shopping, as they enable finer movement than the fixed buggy. Therefore, if you are a person who loves to go shopping, and needs to bring the baby along, a swivel wheel is the perfect choice for you.
In short, swivel wheels are better suited to environments in which you are likely to find many obstacles, and which require greater dexterity of movement.
Fixed Wheels
Fixed wheels, on the other hand, are more suited to open areas, where the path is long and stretches a far. Such wheels are normally better suited to those parents who live in the countryside, where the terrain is rougher; this is because each jolt and bump, if using a swivel wheel, will send the pram off course at every opportunity.
Fixed wheels require less work than swivel wheels, this is because there is no longer a need for constant steering, one move, and you are heading in the right direction, with swivel wheels you need always to make fine adjustments to the direction of the wheels.
There are some buggies on the market, Maclaren buggies for instance, that have dual capacity. They have a special locking system that allows the parents to change the wheels from a swivel setting to a fixed setting, depending on the terrain – however, beware with this design as the wheels may lock at a slight angle, meaning that you will have a slight pull on one side or another.
