Driving a buggy can be a wild and crazy adventure. These recreational vehicles, with their large wheels, wide tires, and open chassis, are made for use on rugged, off road terrain. They are very fun to drive and can be a source of endless fun and adventure. However, it is important that safety is made a priority while driving a buggy, because an accident can cause serious injury and really ruin the fun! Here are a few tips to remember to make your buggy experience safer:
" Always wear safety equipment.
If you happen to get in an accident, wearing a helmet can save your life because it offers protection to your skull in the case of an impact to the head. Don't compromise on quality when it comes to helmets, because cheaper ones are not as strong and your personal wellbeing is worth the investment of a little more money. Also, make sure it fits snugly on your head and does not move around. You can also wear a face shield or sunglasses to protect your eyes from dust and flying debris. Your buggy will have a safety harness, which should be fastened to you at all times. This could save you from flying through the air, should your buggy crash!
" Never drive in unsafe weather.
Always check the forecast before you head out, because very rainy weather can cause the wheels of the buggy to slip around, or the ground underneath to become soft and unstable. Also, if you drive on a very dry day, the dust that your wheels kick up can obscure the vision of yourself and other drivers.
" Check the area for hazards before you begin.
Do a 360 degree scan of the area that you are planning on driving your buggy in. Look out for obstacles such as trees or rocks that you could crash in to. Look for other dangers such as power lines, areas of water, or steep embankments.
" Stay in control.
Always make sure that you keep to a speed where you can control your vehicle. This doesn't mean that you can never go fast; just don't push yourself beyond the limits of your own skill as a driver. Speeding greatly increases your risk of an accident, especially when taking turns at a high speed. When you are turning, ease up on the gas and slowly execute the manoeuvre to avoid tipping over your vehicle.
" Never ride alone.
It is a good idea to always bring a friend with you on a buggy riding expedition. Not only is it more fun, but if something happens and you are in need of assistance, your friend is there to call for help and rescue you. Always bring a cell phone with you in the event that you do need to call for help.
