is it possible to set up computer speakers to work off DC current?
for the past few years i have been building an off road dune buggy/ go kart. to give it an extra flair i wanted to add a speaker system to it. I acquired a set of Altec Lansing ADA745 speakers from my aunt a few years ago and I think they would be excellent for this project. what i am worried about is weather they will work off a dc current see as they use ac right now. i was thinking of possibly making a converter for it but wanted some input on how well you think this would work. any info or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Most computer speaker actually work from DC. They may plug into the wall, but have a power supply inside that converts any AC to a lower DC voltage. The DC voltage can be anything but 6, 9, or 12 volts is common. Unfortunately, the power supply for these speakers in built-in and without taking the speaker with the power supply apart there's no way to know what the actual voltage used is. You could open up the speaker that has the power supply and measure the voltage it puts out. You could also, as another answer suggests, use a voltage inverter to get the 110 VAC you'd need to power these speakers. I see they're only rated at 95 watts so a 200 watt inverter should power them fine. You can get inverters at camping or sporting goods stores. Even WalMart carries them.
