Management teacher"s role in building successful managers of tomorrow
I am Ramesh Vemuganti from Hyderabad .
After 28 years of industry experience in IT Sales & Mktg including 5 years in
Entrepreneurship , I have taken up Managament teaching now and am rediscovering
myself . It is an enjoyable experience as there is so much to Give Back to students .
We need to transfer more energy and learnability skills into the class rooms and teach differently today . With a teaching experience of around 8 years , I wish to share a few points in each mail with you .
1. Focus on the last rankers & back benchers :
Employees in organizations & students in a class have similar characteristics with subtle variances ; Some need not be told what to do , some have to pushed now and then , some need continuous pressure and rest are " better to give up " types. But with students , we cannot neglect or give up any student and need to bring all to one level.
A Teacher has to motivate last ranking students in the class , put in extra efforts to push the student , make him / her work hard to
score high
along with others . That is a " Real Satisfaction " which nothing in the world can offer. .
2. Develop Public Speaking skills
: Delivering a lecture to students or addressing a meeting in a company are the same except for that in case of employees , they are more participative , learn quickly , involved , play games , do credit snatching , more cutthroat & less reliable , in Corporates . In fact to survive and carry on in Corporates, one needs to be tough , businesslike with different nature and blood group .
Students are good listeners , not all are great absorbers , shy even at MBA level too & do not speak out . How does the teacher know whether they understood , to what extant , level , depth , etc . As they do not ask doubts / seek help ,/ spell their mind , the teacher must creatye an environment to make them talk .In last 5 minutes of every class , the teacher must ask 2 students to come to the stage and summarize what is taught in the session , This boosts their confidence and public speaking abilities which is the need of the hour.
3. Teach Loyalty
: Majority of employees are loyal to their job , colleagues , immediate
boss , career , profession but not to their organization .
Students are very loyal to their film stars , friends , cricketers , politicians , caste , region and do not understand much about any job or a Corporate career . Management teachers must teach the significance of " Loyalty for the company " . Infuse a sense of Loyalty into the student for their prospective organization. This adds value to their job and the organization they work for and accelerates their own career growth.
4.
Impart Empathy
: This is an important trait which is not easily found in employees in several organizations.
An employee does not feel for a co worker or colleague or boss , in times of distress. Indifferent employees are a bane to organizational growth . The fact remains that no one has told them earlier the significance of this characteristic.
Management students have to highlight the major role " Empathy " plays in deivery in companies for all prospective managers. Understand the other student from his perspective and help him or her accordingly. This top quality would stand them is good stead decades later at senios level positions too. Students who inculcate this stellar trait grow much faster and higher and make a huge difference to their organization and themselves..
4.
Global Thinking
: Employees have to be imparted more of Life skills in terms of Global thinking , quick learning , cross cultural management skills , global leadership skjills , become competitive , take pride in the work , empathy , being tech savvy , others .
Surprisingly even MBA Students have to be taught - how to behave , raise doubts , what to talk and what not to , what & how to study , going to library , reading habits , visualize their career , work together with classmates , importance. of Team work .
As the legendary American President stated " Do what you can , with what you have , where you are " , Management teachers must shape the MBA students into effective managers of tomorrow and develop the right traits in them.
My favourite sttement is " There are not the days of Independence but Interdependance -- whether a student or an employee. The sooner every one realizes it , the bettter.
