EBONYI STATE GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION 2011: The Assessment of Candidates for Governorship Elections 2011 in Ebonyi state
EBONYI STATE: The Assessment of Candidates for Governorship Elections 2011 in Ebonyi state.
As all political parties' flag fly higher in preparation for the 2011 gubernatorial elections in Ebonyi state, electorates are beginning to evaluate the head men that have opted to slog it out in the state. The contenders include the incumbent Governor, Chief Matins N.Elechi (Ochudooo) of the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP), Amb. Frank Ogbuewu of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Mr. Adol Awom of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), and Sen. Julius Ucha of All Nigerian Peoples' Party (ANPP). While some of the candidates mentioned above had publicly declared their intentions, some are still running a clandestine smear campaign. One can only identify them by their numerous posters and bill boards that have flawed the state capital, Abakaliki.
However, a kind of feasibility appraisal have been carried out across the state on the best candidate, many people stress more on their personalities while others bestow their votes on their ancestral inclinations. Meanwhile, it is pertinent here to stress more on their achievements so far in bringing democratic dividends to the people of the state having occupied one political position or the other. See the brief profiles of each contestant below:
Chief Martins N Elechi: a retired but not tired administrator, a seasoned bureaucrat, one of the founding fathers of the state, is renowned for His peace and attitudinal change initiative in the state as the present governor of Ebonyi state. Some people see him as being autocratic and miserly in handling the financial transactions of the state; many dispute the fact and maintained that he channeled our resources to concrete and capital projects in the state.
The truth is that Chief Martins Elechi's prudence in handling the business of the state vindicated him and gave him the clear chances of standing as the best for the governorship election comes 2011. Though, unlike the former Governor, Dr. Sam Egwu who was noted for his commitment in both cash and project flow in the state during his tenure left a lot of debt to the incumbent governor, perhaps, that is what His Excellency is trying to evade.
More so, Chief Martins Elechi has left a lot of vacuum in the health sector and the educational system in the state. The glory of our Teaching hospital is in shamble. Take away Federal Medical Center from the state, all hope is gone. Kudos to all the Southeastern Governors for their blunt efforts of reaching to a level of parting ways with ASUU in the zone thereby subjecting the students to untold situation at home for months now.
Hurray to the Ebonyi state workers for the declaration of his Excellency in his open campaign declaration recently at Abakalkiki township stadium for his decision for subjecting to the decision of the Federal Executive council of Nigeria led by Dr. Goodluck Jonathan in implementing the new minimum wage. Of course, the new wage has been adopted by the government and this gives Chief Martins Elechi a better chance in the contest among others.
Above all, the peace and sanity he restored in the state. Ebonyi state is the most peaceful state in Nigeria, courtesy of His Excellency. Even when his rival contender, Sen. Julius Ucha was escalating chaos in the state through his fueling of his people, the Ezzas to destroy peoples' lives in Ezillo in the name of communal clashes, Chief Martins Elechi used his bureaucratic and swift experience to quench the mayhem in the area. This gave him an outstanding opportunity for the 2011 elections. Of course, the people of Ezillo will never cast their vote to anyone except the peace maker "Ochudooooo".
His wealth of experience and his cautiousness have paved the way to the man of all. But more power to your elbow in agricultural activities, human empowerment and industrialization (especially, The Nigerian Cement Company, NIGERCEM). Carry Gooooo…
Sen. Julius Ucha: a one time senator who represented the Ebonyi central senatorial zone. Another man only known by a fraction in Ezza tribe (7% of the entire population of the people of Ebonyi). He recently decamped from PDP to ANPP after a political war he instigated against the incumbent governor under the cloak of Ezillo/Ezaa communal war. Consequently, he was dethroned from the senatorial seat, which he loosed to Dr. Emmanuel Onwe. He decided to disgracefully fight back by contesting against Chief Martins Elechi under ANPP. According to Ebonyi Local Newspaper, his only achievements were a procurement of arms and ammunitions to his Ezza people to annihilate Ezillo people; and his stand in paying his assailants and mercenaries to behead innocent souls for the sole aim of his ritualistic submission in preparations for 2011 elections. A whole senator that was arrested over a sponsorship of a communal war. The former senator could not attract any federal project to his constituency during his tenure.
Well, it may be possible that with all these odds, he might emerge a winner of the governor of the state but his victory must be subjected to both human and divine scrutiny before his swearing in to avert the imminent danger of turning Ebonyi state into Middle East.
Amb. Frank Ogbuewu: a one time Minister of Culture and Tourism and former Nigerian ambassador to Greece. A gentleman whose political prowess has not been much exposed due to his inability to hold any elected position at the utmost echelon. Frank hails from the same community with Chief Elechi but he decamped from PDP to APGA after the gubernatorial primary elections in 2007 governorship election in the state where he gallantly lost to the incumbent governor. Of the truth, he has not drawn any state wide development to the people of the state to deserve the seat.
Meanwhile, his proposed governorship conquest is not dependent on his achievements but perhaps, his tribal inclinations.
Mr. Adol Awom: hails from Izzi, in Ebonyi Local Government, a one time chairman of Ebonyi LG; he has remained a political antagonist after a political squabble he had with former governor, Dr. Sam Egwu. His sudden emergence on the race was a public perplexity as he has not recorded any developmental achievement in the state.
Who knows? A bird that dances on the road might have a drummer in the bush"
Finally, voters, the onus lies on us to choose a credible candidate comes 2011 gubernatorial elections in the state. Ensure you register. Don't sell your vote. Your vote counts. Anya saa nuu!!!!
