Keep Your Automobile Appealing with wheel Covers
Wheel covers have not always been known as such. When they were first released on the market, wheel covers (or hubcaps) were typically known as dust or grease caps. They threaded over the central hub on the wheel (wood, steel or even wire) and became increasingly common place in the early 1900's (approximately 1932). Before this period, most hubcaps and wheel covers were made of brass and plated in nickel. As time wore on manufacturers began using less heavy and less expensive metals like aluminum.

By the end of the 1930s almost all vehicles had hub caps in place. they had gone to the clip on rather than threaded type of fastener. Wire type wheel covers generally had a spring-loaded retainer clip that, as a concept, has been passed down through the years and continues to be used to this day.
in the 1940s, steel was quickly becoming the material of choice for manufacturers. They It lent itself well to mass production techniques and reduced the costs of making the caps themselves. The trade-off was that these hubcaps were not very pretty and would succumb to corrosion without maintenance and proper care. It was during this time that wheel covers began to pick up cosmetic function above and beyond their utilitarian purposes. With a desire for aesthetics building the manufacturers decided to make more luxurious plated or stainless caps that would add more shine to the vehicle. Though small in size, as they tended to still mainly act as a cover for just the hub itself, these caps were much more pleasing and gave the vehicles more appeal.
Evolution of Hubcaps
To add more luxury to vehicles, manufacturers began producing an outer rim that would fasten to the wheel. This outer rim was either stainless or chrome and was used to accentuate the center hubcaps. It wasn't long before the outer rim and the center hubcaps were joined to create full-face wheel covers.
Once the full size wheel covers were in play, people realized just how heavy they were. When you spin heavy metal discs over great distances there's a good chance that they'll take off on their own, and that they did. While center hubcaps fell off less, full face wheel covers came to decorate many a service station because motorists would lose them on nearby highways. Services stations would then sell those wheel covers to turn a little profit.
The problem still persists today though less frequently. Many replica wheel covers are made from ultra-light aluminum or plastics that grip tightly. Some manufacturers, like Honda, have devised systems that bolt the hubcaps and wheel covers in place to ensure their secure placement.
Reinventing the Wheel. covers
German engineering has another take on the wheel covers. These models are first attached to the wheel, and then bolted to the car as if the driver or vehicle mechanic were changing the tire out. These wheel covers are commonly made from aluminum as well and are specially designed to improve the airflow in and around the wheel to create a greater downforce variant, depending on the shape of the hubcaps. In use since 1970, primarily in the racing circuit, these style wheel covers prove that hubcaps can be just as functional as they are decorative when it comes to automotive accessories.
