Some people think that you need lessons to fly foam RC Airplanes, which is completely a false belief because these airplanes are very easy to fly. All you need is to select the right plane to start flying. Your first rc airplane should be simple in controls with minimum features and cheap in cost. What is the correct length to width ratio of an airplane propeller?
For a school project I will be designing a 2 blade airplane prop to be cut out on a cnc machine. If thinking about a prop as a 2 dimensional object from above, what would be the correct length to width ration of the prop. By length I mean from tip to tip and by width i mean from one edge of the prop to the other edge. Thanks so much. It would really assist me.
There is no "correct" length to width ratio. A propeller is just a spinning "wing" that creates "lift" to propel an aircraft forward.
A propeller is designed to suit the aircraft type, speed, engine power, and propeller RPM.
What is important, is the section of the blade, and its pitch. Numerous high- speed sections might be used, the selected width (chord) is going to depend on the requirements above.
Propellers for commercial aircraft, and many light aircraft, are variable pitch. They might take off at a fairly fine pitch, but in the air, the blades are twisted in the hub to provide more efficient use of the engine power.
Only "simple" light aircraft, and models, use fixed- pitch propellers.
